Mitsubishi enthusiasts may want to sit down before hearing this: there may be a new high-end SUV on the way. Mitsubishi has been teasing a shadowy photo of a sporty SUV and the brand recently announced a new concept to appear in Paris later in the year. Best of all, the new model will have a plug-in hybrid powertrain, unique for its segment.

According to Automotive News, the Mitsubishi Ground Tourer Concept will have a low-riding body, a coupe style, and athletic fenders. The lighting is sharp and modern on both the front and the rear, while a stunning silhouette has an aura of power. Although there is nothing official yet, Mitsubishi may be releasing the new Ground Tourer in a year or so as part of a larger initiative to develop more green cars by 2020.

“Mitsubishi touts the concept as the latest expression of its push to become a pure SUV player, as the Japanese carmaker tries to build a comeback around its traditional strength in utility vehicles such as the Pajero and Outlander,” said the editors at Automotive News.

This is especially good news since the Galant and Eclipse Coupe have been dropped, leaving many to wonder what would take their place. With a high-power and off-road capable plug-in hybrid SUV on the way, this could just redefine the industry. Instead of gas-guzzling sports cars and SUVs that look more like tanks than cars, Mitsubishi is striving to give customers what they want—all wrapped in an eco-friendly package.
