Summer might be on its way out, but there is still plenty of time to load the kids into your trusty Mitsubishi and pay a visit to one of the many exceptional Staten Island museums. The many curiosity-inducing, family-friendly museums and historical centers are the perfect places to have some fun and get your kids back in the mood for learning before they head back to school.
Here are a few of our all-time favorite Staten Island attractions:
Located right in Tompkinsville, Fort Wadsworth is one of the oldest military forts in the United States. This daunting stronghold used to be impossible to enter (especially if you happened to be British in the 18th-century), but nowadays it’s easy to access: Fort Wadsworth has free admission and is open dawn to dusk.
Historic Richmond Town
This collection of 28 landmarked buildings lets kids and adults alike live like they’re back in the late 1600s, using 17th-century tools and exploring the oldest schoolhouse in America. Richmond Town is open from 1:00 to 5:00 pm, Wednesday to Sunday, with daily guided tours at 2:00 and 3:30 pm.
Staten Island Children’s Museum
Staten Island Children’s Museum is the ideal spot to let your kids run wild to explore and learn. With ultra-fun exhibits and activities, like a real fire truck, insect house, and a functioning foghorn to toot in the Sea of Boats, there’s zero chance of boredom here!
