Lancer Evolution Could Return as New Mitsubishi Crossover

Lancer evolution

It’s no surprise to the auto world that Mitsubishi has a few new SUVs and crossovers in the works; the company announced themselves that the brand would be taking a new, crossover-focused direction following the success of the Outlander. This announcement was swiftly followed by the discontinuation of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, a performance-focused variant of the Lancer nameplate. Now, however, rumors are flying that a new Mitsubishi crossover could revive the Evolution name.

The rumors sprung into existence following an interview with Mitsubishi’s chief operating officer Trevor Mann, who stated the company is currently considering the possibility of bringing a more performance-oriented vehicle back into the lineup. The kicker in his statement, however, was that the new performance flagship “doesn’t necessarily have to be a sedan.”

Interestingly, this vague announcement comes on the heels of the unveiling of Mitsubishi’s upcoming Eclipse Cross. The new crossover, which fills a segment between the Outlander and Outlander Sport, takes the “Eclipse” name from the sports coupe in Mitsubishi’s lineup in the 90s.

So, will we be getting a new Mitsubishi crossover that will carry on the “Evolution” name? That remains to be seen. But Mann has given us a few pieces of the puzzle, and, paired with Mitsubishi’s track record of resurrecting dead badging, we at Bell Mitsubishi have a theory or two of our own.

Take a Look at This What-If Lancer Evo Concept

Since 1992, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution has shown the world that a car doesn’t have to be expensive to be impressive. The Evo delivers high-speed thrills and expert handling without completely emptying your bank account. Unfortunately, Mitsubishi has decided to end the Evo with the 10th generation (EVO X) and 2016 model to focus on more environmentally-friendly cars.

But that doesn’t mean people can’t dream. A Filipino man named Enoch Gabriel Gonzales put his auto design skills to use and created a what-if Lancer Evo concept.

He based his design on the next-generation 2018 Mitsubishi Lancer with sharp edges and killer styling. Then he added Evo characteristics like a large rear wing, hood vents, Brembo brake calipers, and more to create an Evo XI we can all dream about.

Our favorite part of the design is the large honeycomb-patterned grille that features a large XI that appears when looking at the Evo head on.

What we loved the most about the real life Evo was the fact that it could take on cars that cost a lot more money without giving up anything.

While we may never see a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo XI in real life, it is a lot of fun to dream about what it could have been.
