2017 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV First Drive Reviews

Mitsubishi Motors logo

Mitsubishi first announced that the plug-in hybrid version of its popular mid-size crossover would be coming to the US in January of last year, and though it hasn’t debuted in the US just yet, first-drive reviews of the 2017 model are rolling in. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is set to go on sale in the States sometime this summer.

The Outlander PHEV has been a smash hit in Europe and Australia, ranking as the best-selling electric car in Europe since its release in 2013. Recently released in Australia, the new Outlander PHEV has received a big styling refresh as well as engineering updates for better fuel economy and performance.

First drive reviews report that the Outlander PHEV comes with plenty of standard features on its base LS trim, including a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, keyless entry and start, and more. The luxurious Exceed trim offers features like heated seats and a power liftgate.

The 2017 Outlander PHEV adds fast-charging as well as an EV mode, whereas previously it was only available in a hybrid drive mode. The all-electric mode is nearly silent, according to reviewers, and it brings in gasoline power when needed for big bursts of speed or as the battery power gets low.

2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Named IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus

The 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander, Mitsubishi’s popular 7-passenger crossover utility vehicle, has been named an IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus for the fourth year in a row when equipped with the optional Touring Package.

The IIHS, or Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, is a leading auto safety agency that tests vehicles for crashworthiness in various areas, including small overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints. Ratings of “good” in all five tests are required to be named a Top Safety Pick, while a Top Safety Pick Plus has to earn a rating of “advanced” or “superior” for front crash prevention in addition to “good” crash test ratings.

The new Outlander is competitively priced at $23,495 and includes a wide array of safety features like stability control and tire pressure monitoring at the base level, with active safety features like Forward Collision Mitigation and Pedestrian Detection available at the highest SEL trim, which goes for only $29,495—still much less than competitors.

Mitsubishi North America’s executive vice president and COO said in a statement that the company is “committed to safety and providing the best value for our customers” and went on to say that the Outlander’s safety features have been expanded upon even since the 2016 model year. Mitsubishi Outlander Sales Hit 1.5 Million

In the automotive world, sometimes what starts with a humble beginning becomes the inspiration for innovation and fresh design. Such is the case with the Mitsubishi Outlander, the best selling, most popular vehicle in the Mitsubishi lineup. The Outlander is celebrating having recently hit 1.5 million in sales. These are sales that occurred over three generations of the Outlander, making this crossover the most successful Mitsubishi model.

The Mitsubishi Outlander was first introduced in 2000, and launched in the U.S. in 2001. Mitsubishi marketed it as an “Active Sports Crossover.” This was the first time that the term “crossover” was used to categorize a special type of in-between vehicle. Now that crossovers are on the rise as the fastest-growing type of vehicle in America, it’s clear that the Outlander paved the way for a new era in design and utility.

That was then, with the first generation Mitsubishi Outlander. The third and current generation has become the face of Mitsubishi and continues to lead car design into new territory. The Outlander is known well for its PHEV version, the best selling plug-in hybrid in the world. As Nissan and Mitsubishi move forward in their recent partnership, it’s likely that they will be introducing more in the way of green energy, which is something to look forward to. Though even as Mitsubishi Outlander sales hits 1.5 million and the car evolves into newer generations, it yet keeps the fun, sporty and fresh style that gave the crossovers their inspiration.

Mitsubishi Outlander Awards Showcase 2016 Model’s Quality

The auto industry is a competitive place, especially when it comes to the crossover/SUV segment. Mitsubishi saw this, and the brand knew it had to step up its game. With over one hundred improvements, the 2016 Outlander was a statement to the SUV class that it was ready to get serious, and the plentiful amount of Mitsubishi Outlander awards the vehicle has won showcases the incredible strides Mitsubishi took to make the Outlander great.

Following its launch fall of 2015, the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander immediately won honors such as a placement on Kelley Blue Book’s Best Buy Award Finalist list and an Active Lifestyle Vehicle of the Year Award. The Active Lifestyle Awards named the Outlander the “Best Value on the Road” title, proving the Outlander holds it own against other competitors in the awards program’s test-drive-based judging system.

KBB.com also named the Outlander one of the Most Affordable Three-Row Vehicles of 2016 this past May.

Giving the Mitsubishi Outlander awards shows that not only are buyers loving this affordable alternative to big names on the market, but that professional organizations within the industry are, too. Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly vehicle to drive the kids to soccer practice or you want something that suits an active lifestyle, the 2016 Outlander has your back.

Check Out These Key Outlander Features

The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander is loaded with tons of features designed and built to offer you the best driving experience, whether you’re looking for entertainment, performance, comfort, convenience, or more. Nothing compares to the experience of test-driving it for yourself, but we’ve taken the time to put the spotlight on a few key Outlander features.

First of all, the 2016 Outlander is designed for performance. Even though the Outlander Sport has the upper hand in this category, the base Outlander still offers fun maneuvering and a smooth ride without compromising any of its SUV functionality. Two engine and transmission options, Super All-Wheel Control, and high-end handling add to the experience.

Additionally, interior comforts include standard space for seven passengers, as well as versatile seating, a more quiet and relaxing cabin than ever, and dual-zone automatic climate control. All the tech is centrally-located and intuitive, so the driver can access everything from their music library to their standard rearview camera through the 6.1” touchscreen. Drivers can even opt for Eco Mode that allows you to switch to a more fuel efficient driving mode.

These are only a few key Outlander features, and the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander has many more to offer, so make sure you do your research and take one for a spin. You might be surprised!

A Turbo-Charged Mitsubishi Future?

Mitsubishi was the premiere automaker when it came to turbocharged engines but the brand has dropped the powertrain over the past decade or two. Now, the Japanese automaker wants to bring back the turbocharged engine that put them on the map. Even better, the first new engine will roll out in a new vehicle as well.

The first off the lot is a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that will power Mitsubishi’s newest midsized crossover. Expected to hit dealerships in 2018, it’s sure to set the pace for the next generation of engines.

That crossover is likely to fit between the Mitsubishi Outlander and Outlander Sport. There’s more good news for turbocharged fans.

Word has it Mitsubishi is considering putting a 1.1-liter turbocharged engine under the hood of the latest Mirage. Not only that but there very well could be a larger turbocharged engine powering the next-gen Outlander.

If plans come to fruition, the turbo-charged Mitsubishi future should be complete by 2019.

As a whole, the Mitsubishi brand sells around 100,000 vehicles annually but that could change very soon. Mitsubishi is putting an emphasis on marketing and showed support for dealerships following suit.

With the combination of increased marketing and the return of turbocharged engines, Mitsubishi’s future is looking bright!

Here at Bell Mitsubishi, we can’t wait to see the latest turbocharged engines!
